About Kirsty

I practice person-centred counselling, which means I focus on the unique experiences, feelings and perspectives that you bring into the counselling room. I provide a safe, empathic space which allows you to explore your thoughts and emotions without judgement. It is important to me that you feel heard and that our relationship enables you to explore your own values and insights that can lead to you living in alignment with your own values.

Every counselling relationship is different, and that is what I love. Learning about people, and working together to forge our own pathway through the challenges you are facing is always an exciting journey, and while we might sometimes have to talk about the tough stuff, I value being able to bring in moments of humour and lightness too.

While a person-centred approach runs throughout all of my counselling, I am also trained in other modalities such as ACT (Acceptance & Commitment Therapy), Narrative therapy and DBT (Dialectic Behaviour Therapy).

I am a provisional member of the New Zealand Association of Counsellors.

FAQs
Why Counselling?

There are many reasons why someone may consider going to counselling. Counselling provides a safe and confidential space to explore difficult emotions, thoughts, and experiences that may be causing distress or impacting daily functioning. Counselling can help individuals develop coping strategies to manage stress, anxiety, depression, and other mental health concerns. It can also be helpful in improving communication skills and relationships, developing a greater sense of self-awareness and self-esteem, and enhancing overall well-being. Counselling is a collaborative process between the counsellor and the client, and can provide a supportive and non-judgmental environment to help individuals overcome challenges and achieve their personal goals. Seeking counselling is a courageous step towards improving one's mental health and quality of life, and can be a transformative experience.

What makes counselling work?

Counselling works through the combination of a supportive environment and a skilled professional who can guide you through the process of exploring your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. I will use evidence-based techniques and strategies to help you gain insight into your challenges and develop coping skills to manage them. Ultimately, what makes counselling work is your willingness to engage in the process and the commitment to making positive changes in your life.

What to expect from a session?

In a counselling session, you can expect to have a safe, non-judgmental space to discuss your concerns with a trained professional. During the session, I will actively listen to what you have to say, offer feedback, and provide emotional support as you explore your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. Together, we will work to develop personalised strategies and techniques to manage your emotions and cope with difficult situations. Person-centred counselling uses a non-directive approach, where you are in control of the direction of the session and the topics discussed. It's important to remember that counselling is a collaborative process, and I will work with you to achieve your goals and improve your mental health and well-being. Ultimately, you can expect to gain insight into your challenges, develop coping skills, and build resilience to overcome difficulties and lead a more fulfilling life.
